Love and Other Bruises
Jesus Christ Superstar opened in 1975 and ran through October 1976. I believe we played 10 shows a week with matinees on Friday and Saturday. We toured Australia and New Zealand in all the major cities, and there wasn't a week that went by that we didn't work on Graham's songs.
Not only did we work on his material, but we also played live outside the show. We played universities at lunch time and coffee bars after the show ended for the evening. Between performing in the show and working together outside the show, we became very good very quickly and it was obvious that we had a future. I was fortunate enough to understudy the roles of Judas, Jesus, Simon and Annas as the show progressed, which was a tremendous boost to my vocal confidence.
At some point in 1976, Graham suggested that we record four or five songs and try to obtain a record deal. We engaged Frank Esler Smith and some of the other members of the orchestra and recorded some quite primitive demo tapes on a cassette machine with the intention of taking them to as many record company people we could find, hoping to be signed to a major label.
A much more difficult task than we thought, as everyone had the same response: we were "too mellow" and "ballads aren't happening." We even pooled our resources to take one of the most respected record company executives out for a very expensive dinner, which also didn't help our cause. He rejected us.
Finally we met with Peter Dawkins at CBS records in Sydney. Peter was a successful record producer and company execuive. We played our songs for him and, much to our delight, he offered us a recording contract. One particular song stood out to him. The title was "Love and Other Bruises," and it would turn out to be a mega hit in Australia for us and the first of many hit songs in our career.
